Downhill mountain bikes are designed for one thing only and that is to go downhill fast! Downhill Mountain Bikes, as they are known, are the heaviest bikes at about 40 pounds. They are equipped with elaborate front and back suspension systems – the most of any style of mountain bike – and they have very large brakes. Ski lifts, trams or shuttles are needed to reach the top of downhill courses and riders wear an extensive amount of protection. Standard items include a full face helmet with goggles, knee and elbow pads and leather jackets designed for use by motorcycle riders.
Freeride mountain bikes are the close cousin of downhill mountain bikes, with similar amounts of suspension and weight. However, unlike Downhill Mountain Bikes, freeride mountain bikes can be pedaled uphill. They are also used in slope-style jumping, making them the most versatile of all mountain bikes.
