Mountain Bike Braking System

Mountain Bike brakes are very essential and important parts of your Mountain Bike structure.  Of course, when you think of the braking system, you automatically understand the primary purpose of this system is to stop the Mountain Bike.  Aside from just stopping the Mountain Bike, the braking system has very important other functions as well.  The Mountain Bike brakes also aide in re-directing your bike and also maintaining the balance.

There are different types of Mountain Bike brakes including disc brakes, rim brakes, and V-brakes.  The disc brake system is known to be the most efficient braking system because the brake performance is not obstructed by water or mud debris.  Disc brakes perform very well under any condition because they are positioned in the center of the wheel.  Disc brakes will remain dry even when your biking on a wet trail.  As an added note, your disc brakes will be heavier and more expensive.  The rim brake system is an inexpensive and lightweight braking system.  The rim brake system provides good braking performance,  provided the rims are kept in good condition.  The main thing to remember is that rim brakes do not perform well on wet or muddy roads.  In the present Mountain Bike era, we also have linear pull type brakes or V-brakes.  These brakes are standard in all ranges of Mountain Bikes.  The V-brakes were introduced in the early ninetys and these brakes are lightweight, easy to install, and inexpensive.  Also of note, V-brakes are not really the best when biking on your wet roadways and the cables are susceptable to rust.  I would reccomend greasing the cables on a regular schedule to alleviate this condition.

All of these types of Mountain Bike brakes are used and it really comes down to personal preference as to which system you go with.  Disc brakes would be the likely choice if the cost and additional weight is not of major concern.  The key element is that you have consistent braking power in all conditions you are riding in.  Aside from these more popular braking systems, there are other types of specialized systems available on the market.

Needless to say, Mountain Bike brakes are a vital element of the total package.  Learn to brake properly, use safety always, and enjoy your ride!
